Hike to the Pfeishütte mountain hut

From the Hafelekar mountain station near Innsbruck, a path proceeds via the 2,315 m high Mandlscharte to the beautiful Pfeis Mountain Hut.

From the centre of Innsbruck straight up into the high mountains of the Northern Calcareous Alps. The tour starts by the Hungerburg Funicular and then by the Nordkette Cable Car up to the Hafelekar Mountain Hut at 2,270 m a.s.l. (Hafelekarhaus), starting point of our mountain hike. The view sweeps to the Alpine divide in the south with the Alpine City of Innsbruck beneath.

This gorgeous view will accompany us for a long while along the path no. 219, the Goethe Path (Goetheweg) or Herrmann-Buhl Path, which we walk until the Pfeis Mountain Hut (Pfeishütte). On the ridge of the Nordkette mountain chain, the path proceeds mostly easily to moderately and without major altitude differences. After about 1.7 km, beneath Mt. Mandlspitze, it branches off to the left. A short ascent leads us beneath the Gleierschtaler Brandjoch ridge to the Mandlscharte wind gap, then the path proceeds downhill to the Pfeisgraben area, where the Pfeis Mountain Hut is located at 1,922 m a.s.l.

Not only the place amidst the Karwendel Mountains is fascinating, also the Pfeishütte itself is among the most beautiful mountain huts throughout the country. For our way back we take the same route, but now we have to manage more metres in altitude in ascent. The ticket of the Nordkette Cable Car was not quite cheap, but the panoramic view and the breathtaking alpine world of the Karwendel Alpine Park really rewarded us.
