Zams Gorge

The Zams Gorge in the Oberinntal valley, the “Mystic Canyon of Tyrol”, is an adventure for the whole family

For centuries, the power of water has formed a deep gorge in Zams: the "Zammer Lochputz". Once upon a time, horse-drawn carriages used to take visitors to the entrance of the Zams Gorge (or Lötz Gorge). However, in order to experience it at first hand, people needed ropes and much courage. Today, you can explore it on the Water Adventure Trail (Wasser-Erlebnis-Steig).

The trail starts at one of the oldest power plants of Tyrol and takes you into the gorge. It runs past a pending bridge to an abandoned smithy, which is subject of a legend: Once upon a time, a widowed blacksmith used to live in this place with a beautiful nymph. When the shepherd of the Lochalm Mountain Hut was able to solve several serious problems, he deserved her hand in marriage, but the blacksmith manipulated the pending bridge. The shepherd deceased in the gorge. Still today a bullhead, known as "Zammer Lochputz", as well as a beautiful head of a girl, formed by the power of water, can be seen in the gorge. They remind on their unfulfilled love.

This is also where the impressive Lötz Waterfall cascades into the depth. Further stations are the Roman Tower, the Mirror Cave, the playground, and the Kneipp facility. A particular highlight: the evening walks in summer! Also in winter evening walks are offered through the iced gorge.
