Gerlos

From Zell am Ziller you proceed towards east, into the Gerlos Valley and up to the Gerlos Pass on 1,531 m a.s.l

Altitude: 1,250 m a.s.l.

Gerlos is located in the Gerlos Valley, a tributary valley of the Zillertal. Already a thousand years ago, when Gerlos was called "Gerlaise", the Gerlos Pass was a strategic point for trade between the Zillertal valley and the Salzburg area. Today the pass road, connecting Krimml (famous due to its waterfalls) and Gerlos, is a popular destination for day-trippers on motorbike and convertibles.

Here, in the wonderful mountains of the Zillertal Arena, there is Gerlos with its hamlets. There are several sights in the holiday village, such as the beautiful parish church with its bulbous cupola. In the early 18th century, this former Gothic construction was converted to Baroque style. Also the frescoes in the nave and the statues on both sides of the Baroque high altar date back to this period of time. In the vicinity there is the war memorial in remembrance of the victims of the WWs.

In summer, the active offer starts down in the valley, more precisely on the fitness course and the Gerlos high rope course. Then we head for the mountains: There you can find the Durlassboden Reservoir at 1,405 m a.s.l. which features its own surfing and sailing school. This is where you can enjoy a jump into the cool water - it reaches 21 degrees C. The summer hiking paradise, in winter transforms into a white dream: The Zillertal Arena Ski Region is the largest skiing area of the valley.
