Use the power of wind to surf over the waters of Tyrolean lakes.
Starting from June, kite and wind surfers meet at Lake Achensee, where the conditions for surfing are really perfect. Located between the Karwendel mountain range and the Brandenberg Alps, in summer this lake is characterised by a “thermic wall”, a very strong breeze coming from north, which blows around 2 pm. Surfers and sailors call this breeze also the “Bavarian breeze”. Lake Achensee, which features a maximum depth of 133 m, is the largest Tyrolean lake and is therefore also called “Tyrolean Sea”. Directly at the lakeside there are numerous surf and sailing clubs, which do not only offer equipment for rental, but also organise regattas on a regular basis.
Moreover in Tyrol you can also kite and surf in the artificial lake Durlassbodenspeicher, located at 1.400 m asl in the locality of Gerlos in the Zillertal valley. This lake offers ideal conditions both for beginners and advanced surfers and kiters. By the way: this is also where you can find the highest located surf and sailing school of Austria.
Enjoy the idyll of Tyrolean mountain lakes and… hang loose!
