Rohrberg

The holiday resort of Rohrberg extends at the bottom of the valley and at the slopes of the sunny Rohrberg mountain.

Altitude: 675 m asl

Mühlbachsiedlung, Rohr, Haslach, Hochfeld and the scattered settlement at the west slope of the Karspitze mountain make up the municipality of Rohrberg in the rear Zillertal valley. At the foot of the Rohrberg mountain, however, there is the generating plant Gerlos for the reservoir at Gmünd, located at 1,190 m asl. The three golden reeds on the emblem of the valley illustrate the name of the village figuratively, as “Rohr” in German means reed.

In former times people tried to pan for gold in the municipal area, without hardly any success. The former administrative centre of the mine, the “Gallerhaus” building, was purchased in the 19th century by the Kammersänger Felix Kraus from Munich and transformed into a villa. Still today the Kraus Promenade reminds on this famous artist. Along this shady path across the forest, within approximately one hour you reach the Gerlosstrasse road, and via the Gerlosbergbrücke bridge you reach Rohrberg. Particularly popular is also the regional museum of the Zillertal valley at Zell am Ziller nearby. Various buildings such as the “Ental” farm which was transferred from Burgstall/Schwendau into the museum areal, provide an insight into the life of former centuries!

Those who love hiking will be enthusiastic at Rohrberg and Gerlosberg, not only due to the so-called “RegioTax”, a means of local transport, which connects the mountain parts of Rohrberg and Gerlosberg as well as the valley area of Rohrberg on a regular basis. The hiking trails take you into the Zillertal Arena, a hiking area located in the Zillertal Alps. The cosy taverns along the hiking routes make you stop and have a delicious Tyrolean afternoon snack. In winter there is the Kreuzjochbahn funicular, the lower terminus of the Zillertal Arena, the large ski region of the Zillertal valley. Brought into being in 2000 by affiliating three skiing areas of the valley, today this ski carousel offers 143 km of ski slopes.

Our recommendation: from the top of the Karspitze mountain (2,263 m asl) you can enjoy a great view on the Zillertal Alps and the Tux Pre-Alps!
