The holiday resort Uderns is located in the heart of the Zillertal valley along the Zillertal Railway.
Altitude: 549 m asl
Between Fügen and Ried im Zillertal, there is the municipality of Uderns with its eponymous chief city, the hamlets of Finsing and Kleinboden and the farm settlement Kupfnerberg. Once upon a time in the village there was not only a famous oil distillery, but from the 16th to the 19th century of great economic important was also the iron ore industry. Equally important for the inhabitants of Uderns was the steam hammer plant at Kleinboden/ Fügen. As one of few villages of the Zillertal valley Uderns has always been part of Tyrol, which is perpetuated by the red and white colours on the emblem of the village. The horseshoe, however, symbolises the economic past of the village in the field of iron processing.
This calm village opens up all possibilities available in the Zillertal valley regarding leisure time activities, including the fabulous Zillertal Alps. This mountain range is characterised by frequent glaciation above 2,500 m asl. One of the most impressive mountains of this chain is the Hintertux Glacier, located about 30 km from Uderns at the end of the valley, actually denominating the two glaciers Gefrorene-Wand-Kees and Riepenkees. Both are made accessible via lift facilities and are famous as whole-year round skiing area. Not only is this glacier impressive in winter, but also in summer it is fantastic to enjoy the fabulous view from the panoramic terrace at 3,250 m asl! The “Gletscherbus 3″ funicular transports you to the mountain station, also with prams or wheelchairs.
Since 2003 the Zillertal Railway stops again at Uderns. This narrow-gauge railway has been operating in the Zillertal valley from 1902 between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. Handicapped employees are working at the station in the frame of an integration project. And in the village, there is also the famous Caritas centre Zillertal, a meeting place for handicapped and non-handicapped people. A therapeutic-pedagogic kindergarden, a children’s game group and a day-care centre for people needing particular support are part of this facility. However, there are also a swimming pool and a gym that are accessible to anyone.
Our recommendation: cross-country skiing is a perfect way for experiencing the winter landscape of the Zillertal valley and to come to rest. Thanks to its position you can easily access several trails in the surroundings. Enjoy yourselves!
