Aschau im Zillertal is located at a narrowing at the junction of anterior and posterior Zillertal valley. Its main locality can be found at the bottom of the valley, and several hamlets and component localities spread on the slopes. "Aschowe" (Eschenau) was first mentioned alreday back In 1309 AD, referring to the European ash tree forests widely spread in this area.
The village features two stations of the Zillertal Railway: Aschau and Erlach. In the warm months of the year, the nostalgic narrow-gauge railway takes you to Mayrhofen with its highlights such as the highest located bird of prey station of Europe and the Zillertal Adventure Dairy, or - in the other direction - to Jenbach, where you can take the Achensee Railway to the shores of Lake Achensee.
Active holidaymakers can choose between a wide range of outdoor activities. Above Aschau, in the fantastic mountain world, the Aschau High Route takes you towards the Klooalm (1,224 m a.s.l.) and the Ragstatt Mountain Huts. The path is also suitable for mountain bikes. Another cycle path is the Zillertal Cycle Route down in the valley. In winter, Aschau im Zillertal is located between the Hochfügen and Zillertal Arena ski regions. Furthermore, the toboggan run Lengstein and the 4 km long Aschau - Stumm cross-country ski track show you the beauty of the snowy landscape.
