Aschau im Zillertal

Aschau is located at 567 m asl at the junction of anterior and posterior Zillertal valley.

Altitude: 567 m asl

The municipality of Aschau im Zillertal is located at a narrowing of the Zillertal valley with its main locality Aschau at the bottom of the valley and several hamlets and component localities spread on the slopes. In 1309 AD the village has first been mentioned as “Aschowe” (Eschenau), referring to the European ash tree forests widely spread in this area. In 1973 Distelberg, by then an autonomous village, was merged into the municipality of Aschau im Zillertal.

The emblem of the village shows a golden duck on blue background, referring to a former wild duck live stock at a time when there were many ash tree forests in the surroundings. The so-called “Entenstein” (duck stone) still reminds on these days. The parish church “Zu unserer Lieben Frau vom Siege” (Our Lady of the Rosary) was established in 1850 in late classicism construction style and is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings of Aschau. While this church, as also the village itself does, belongs to the diocese of Innsbruck, the village Distelberg and its succursal church dedicated to St. Leonhard are part of the diocese of Salzburg. Worth seeing inside this succursal church is the lunette vault as well as the carved Renaissance pulpit dating back to the 17th century.

In summer one of the main attractions are the fantastic mountains of the Zillertal Alps. This area abounds with hiking tails, providing fabulous views and great panoramas. And in winter Aschau is embedded between the two ski centers Hochfügen and Zillertal Arena. Only 30 km away, there is the Hintertux Glacier, a famous whole-year-round skiing area. However, it does not necessarily be all about winter sports, what about a horse-drawn sleigh ride or a walk in torchlight, with a warming mulled wine afterwards? By the way: at Aschau, there is also a comfort camping with several sports facilities and leisure time offers. A particular whereabouts for young guests, as the adjacent adventure park does not only include an adventure lake, but also facilities for archery, horse riding as well as a western fort with teepees.

Our recommendation: don’t miss a ride with the nostalgic Zillertal narrow-gauge railway, stopping at Aschau im Zillertal and Erlach. A lasting experience!
