Schwendau

The holiday resort of Schwendau in the rear Zillertal valley is accessible via the Zillertal road.

Altitude: 620 m asl

The municipal area comprises numerous component localities, including parts of Hippach, and extends from the Ziller river up to the 2,590 m high Hoarbergjoch pass. Schwendau is closely connected to the neighbouring village of Hippach and they also share several facilities. First mentioned in 1200 as “Swentowe” (clearing of a pasture), today Schwendau is a popular holiday resort. The original meaning of this name is also illustrated on the emblem of the village in the form of an axe.

Worth visiting is the parish church of Schwendau, located on an elevation in the municipal area of Hippach, while the parish house is part of the municipality of Schwendau. This church, constructed in the 13th century, boasts three wonderful altars and is dedicated to the Saints Ingenuin and Albuin. After the earthquake of 1698 AD it was restored in early Baroque style. Moreover on the top of the Burgstallschrofen hill, there was a castle up to the 14th century! However, those who prefer active holidays can look forward to the Nature Park Zillertal Alps, which is undoubtedly a natural jewel. Eighty glaciers and numerous lakes such as the artificial lakes Schlegeis, Stillup and Zillergründl characterize the landscape. Several rare plant species complete the offer and flora and fauna are more than diversified!

In winter the ski region “Ski Zillertal 3000″ is directly accessible from the village, where the Horbergbahn funicular starts from. Accessible with one ski pass only, this ski resort boats 196 km of well-groomed ski runs. For those who prefer tobogganing, there are several runs in the surroundings, one of which is the Gerlosstein run, the longest toboggan run of the Zillertal valley. In addition there is a natural track at Mayrhofen, starting from the inn Wiesenhof on 1,560 m asl, as well as the family track at the inn Lacknerbrunn with a length of 2.5 km.

Our recommendation: quad driving from Schwendau across the Zillertal valley and canyoning provide the thrill you might seek in your holidays!
