Ramsau im Zillertal

The area of Ramsau in the rear Zillertal valley extends from the Ziller river up to the 2,350 m high Hochfeld mountain.

Altitude: 604 m asl

The municipality of Ramsau im Zillertal is made up of Ramsau, located at the bottom of the valley as well as the component localities of Oberbichl, Unterbichl and Ramsberg, located on an elevation. In 1188 AD the village has been first mentioned as “Ramsowe”, which means “raven pasture”. Also the raven on the emblem of the village refers to the name of the village. In former times Ramsberg was a self-sufficient village, but when public life more and more shifted from Ramsberg to Ramsau, also the name of the municipality changed into Ramsau.

One of the highlights of Ramsau im Zillertal is the more than 110-year old Zillertal narrow-gauge railway, as with “Ramsau-Hippach” and “Ramsau im Zillertal Bühel” the holiday village offers two stops of this railway. You absolutely do not have to miss a ride with this nostalgic train! In summer, however, visitors are attracted by the fantastic mountains of the Zillertal Alps, as the surroundings of Ramsau offer plenty of hiking and mountain bike trails. The Gerlospass is not only a perfect starting point for hikes, the alpine road of Gerlos also offers a fantastic view. The Ramsberg lift facility, however, takes you onto the Sonnalm pasture where you can do a round trail to the Koahornhütte refuge and further on to the mountain inn Gerlosstein. We recommend you to schedule about 3 hours, Tyrolean delicacies included!

Another popular destination is the old mill of the “Wurzenmax” at Ramsau, exhibiting some 2,000 pieces of rare minerals, semiprecious stones, gemstones as well as rock crystals. Moreover there are wooden statues made of roots as well as coloured icebergs in the garden in winter. For skiers and snowboarders, the Ramsberg lift facility is the key to the Gerlosstein skiing area, a small but mighty one. Otherwise the ski area Mayrhofen boasts 136 km of well-groomed ski slopes and 57 lift facilities. It is famous for its snow park, the Vans Penken Park, as well as the “White Lounge”, an igloo village on the panorama plateau of the Ahorn mountain. There is no boredom at Ramsau!

Our recommendation: visit the parish church “Mariä Sieben Schmerzen” (Our Lady of Sorrows). This church has been constructed in 1841 in classical style and the high altar is decorated by a portrait of the Dolorous Mother.
