Ramsau im Zillertal

The Old Mill of the “Wurzenmax” at Ramsau exhibits some 2,000 pieces of rare minerals, gemstones and rock crystals

Altitude: 604 m a.s.l.

Ramsau in the rear Zillertal valley extends from the Ziller river up to the 2,350 m high Hochfeld in the Zillertal Alps. Ramsau itself is located at the bottom of the valley, and the component localities of Oberbichl, Unterbichl and Ramsberg on an elevation. In 1188 AD, the village was mentioned as "Ramsowe", "raven pasture". Also the raven on the emblem of the village refers to this name.

One of the highlights of Ramsau is the old Zillertal Railway, as with Ramsau-Hippach and Ramsau im Zillertal Bühel the holiday village offers two stops of this narrow-gauge railway. Furthermore, the surroundings feature plenty of hiking and mountain bike trails. One of the most popular destinations is the Gerlos Pass: The Gerlos Alpine Road offers a fantastic view, and the 1,628 m high pass itself is a perfect starting point for hikes to the surrounding mountain huts.

In former times, Ramsau was directly connected with the hiking and skiing area on Mt. Gerlosstein. Unfortunately, this Ramsberg Lift was closed some years ago. Today, the large Mayrhofen Ski Resort is only 4 km away, above all famous for its snow park, the PenkenPark, as well as the White Lounge, an igloo village on the panorama plateau of Mt. Ahorn. The Zillertal valley is also perfectly suited for winter hikes and beautiful snow-shoe tours.
