Kaltenbach

Kaltenbach is located in the heart of the Zillertal valley on the detritic cone of the Kaltenbach river.

Altitude: 558 m asl

The municipality of Kaltenbach with the hamlet Ernberg has first been mentioned in 1150 as “Chartenbach”. Constantly threatened by the Riedbach, Angerbach and Kaltenbach rivers as well as the Ziller river, agriculture was almost impossible in the surroundings of Kaltenbach. However, starting from 1685 AD pharmaceutical trade flourished in the Zilllertal valley, reaching also Switzerland and Germany. The emblem of the village shows a mill wheel, as originally there were many mills along the Kaltenbach river…

The Zillertal narrow-gauge railway, running from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, also stops at Kaltenbach and stands for a particular train ride, a travel back in time! Worth to be visited are two chapels in the municipal area, the Marienkapelle chapel (St. Mary’s chapel) and the Hubertus chapel. Inside the St. Mary’s chapel dating back to the 17th century you can observe artistic paintings, several statues and beautifully decorated glass windows. The war memorial at the forefront of the chapel was established by the sculptor Hans Rieser from Hippach. The Hubertus chapel located close to the Neuhüttenalm pasture, some years ago was equipped with a 7 m high steeple in remembrance of the freedom fights of 1809. The decorative glass windows show the eagle illustrated on the emblem of Tyrol, the Madonna with baby Jesus as well as Andreas Hofer, the freedom fighter. This chapel can be visited in summer months.

In summer the hiking area Hochzillertal is located along the Zillertaler Höhenstrasse, a toll panorama road, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful Alpine roads of Austria. Driving to the Kaltenbacher Skihütte refuge (1,800 m asl), in a 30-minutes’ walk you can reach the Alpine Flower Garden. Also the great trail to the waterfall is particularly popular. The fairytale landscape of the Zillertal Alps is going to enthusiast you! In winter, however, there is the Hochfügen ski region, which can comfortably be reached via the Hochzillertalbahn funicular. Moreover you can enjoy cross-country skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing and tobogganing.
