Augustine Museum Rattenberg

This museum has been inaugurated in 1993 in Rattenberg and is a former Augustinian monastery.

In 1385 a Bavarian professional hunter donated the Augustinian monastery of Rattenberg, which has been expanded several times in the course of the centuries. In 1971 this monastery was abandoned and transformed into a museum, which was inaugurated in 1993. Furthermore the entire monastery complex has been restored. One year later it has been awarded with the Austrian Museum Prize. Later on also the Tyrolean Museum Prize and the Austrian seal of quality were awarded to the museum.

The Augustine Museum Rattenberg is a regional museum featuring exhibits, which mainly come from the Tiroler Unterland region. The focus of the exhibition is set on Gothic sculptures, gold and silver smithery, Baroque arts and religious folk art. In a word, it presents Tyrolean treasures of nine centuries. The walls of these antique building also have to be considered as exhibits rather than as a venue only. Moreover the museum offers various programmes for children and school classes in cooperation with different pedagogic authorities.

Part of the monastery - unique in Tyrol - is a church steeple that can be walked on. After a comprehensive period of construction, from 2010 the historic church steeple and the attic of the monastery church are open to the public. A special highlight are also the concerts and exhibitions taking place in the monastery, inter alia also the yearly cloister concerts (Rattenberger Kreuzgang-Konzerte).
