As its name reveals, Eben am Achensee is located on the shores of Lake Achensee. The municipality is made up of the main village of Eben with the St. Notburga Church, as well as the component localities Maurach am Achensee where the Rofan Cable Car starts, Buchau with its "beach" and the hotel settlement Pertisau. From Bavaria, already in the 12th century a bridle path led from the Achenpass to Maurach, and only in 1955 it was transformed into an asphalted road.
Since 1313 AD, the grave of the Tyrolean Saint Notburga von Rattenberg is located in the St. Notburga Pilgrimage Church in Eben. It was erected on the walls of a Romanesque church and contains frescoes illustrating scenes of the life of the Saint Notburga as well as her mortal remains, which are are treasured in a shrine at the altar. In the building next to the church, you can visit the Saint Notburga Museum, the only museum in Austria that is solely dedicated to a Saint.
In summertime, Lake Achensee decides on the activities in this area: Swimming, sailing, surfing or a boat tour are very popular. The Lake Achensee Ferry and Cruise Company made Lake Achensee famous also beyond borders: The first steam boat "St. Joseph" already sailed the lake in 1887. The Karwendel Mountains, however, are above all famous for the Bächental valley, where fossil oil, which is used to produce wellness products, is extracted. In winter, you can choose from the Rofan Skiing Area and the Zwölferkopf Skiing Areas, both located within easy reach.
