Eben am Achensee

Eben am Achensee is located in the Achental valley, at the lakeside of beautiful Lake Achensee.

Altitude: 940 m asl

The municipality of Eben am Achensee is made up of the main village of Eben, as well as Maurach am Achensee, Buchau and Pertisau. From Bavaria, already in the 12th century a bridle path has lead from the Achenpass throughout the valley to Maurach and only in 1955 an asphalted road was established. The emblem of the village shows blue fields, representing Lake Achensee, a black field which stands for the mountains as well as a latern in the centre, which is the so-called “Notburga-Candele”.

Since 1313 AD the grave of the Tyrolean Saint Notburga von Rattenberg, patron saint of servants and agriculture, is located at Eben. Furthermore the parish church is dedicated to Saint Notburga and there is also a Notburga museum, which is the only museum in Austria that is solely dedicated to a saint. Inaugurated in 2004, it shows exhibition objects and loans concerning the Saint Notburga’s life. In 2006 this culture facility was awarded with the Tyrolean Museum Prize, as this museum highly complies with the requirements for a modern museum.

Located in great position at Lake Achensee, this lake in summertime decides on the activities in this area: swimming, sailing, surfing or simply shipping on the lake, which made Lake Achensee famous also beyond borders. The first steam boat “St. Joseph” already sailed the lake in 1887. Probably for this reason the lake is also called “Tyrolean Sea”. Moreover there are the great mountains of the Karwendel Alpine Park, so Eben is a perfect destination if you would like to spend your holidays in Tyrol. The Karwendel mountain chain is above all famous for the Bächental valley, where fossil oil, which is used to produce wellness products, is extracted. In winter you can choose from the Rofan (11 km of ski slopes) and Zwölferkopf skiing areas (12 km of ski slopes), both located within easy reach.

Our recommendation: the pilgrimage church St. Notburga is worth to be visited. This church has been built on the grounds of a Roman church and contains frescoes illustrating scenes of the life of the Saint Notburga. Also her mortal remains are treasured in a shrine at the altar.
