Stans is a comfortable holiday resort at the foot of the Karwendel mountain chain.
Altitude: 560 m asl
The nature reserve community of Stans with its 2,000 inhabitants is located at the foot of the Karwendel mountain range. This is regarded as the largest nature park in area of Austria and is therefore a very popular holiday destination both in summer and in winter for hikers and mountain bikers.
At Stans, there is much to discover: the Wolfsklamm gorge, a canyon near the village, proceeds across many bridges and 354 steps to the oldest pilgrimage site of North Tyrol - St. Georgenberg. On the way from St. Georgenberg to Tratzberg Castle you walk past the little Maria Tax Chapel which has been fully restored again by pensioners of Stans. Also Tratzberg Castle, a Renaissance treasure from the 13th century, is publicly accessible. Interesting guided tours in seven languages are offered every hour. In the village two gorgeous churches can be admired. The Laurentius Church (probably from the 8th century) and the Sacred Heart Church from the 1960s.
The local mountain Stanser Joch (2,102 m asl) is a fantastic hiking tour. At the summit you can enjoy an unforgettable view on Lake Achensee. This lake is the biggest of Tyrol, it has a circumference of 21 km and a depth of 133 metres. The village life is characterized by many festivals, parades and events, which are done by the local associations. Such as the annual village festival, where you can try plenty of Tyrolean delicacies. Join celebrating!
Our recommendation: there is a children’s entertainment programme in order to enable parents to fully enjoy and relax in their holidays. “Karwendolin”, the mascot, provides fun and action for kids (aged 3 up)!
