In the Weikart rift an old corn mill of Alpbach, which is powered by water, has been activated again.
Some decades ago still 25 mills could be found in the Alpbachtal valley, all of them powered by water. There the local farmers could grind their corn. Only the so-called “Stettauer Mill”, also known as Weikart Mill remained. The association “Alpbach for European Culture” (Club Alpbach für Europäische Kultur) supported by the municipality of Alpbach rebuilt the mill on its original foundations, today it is publicly accessible every three weeks, when the flour is ground like in former times.
In close vicinity to the Weikart Mill also a scutching room (Brechelstube, in German) to roast flax - in order to produce linen - is located. There you can witness the process from the cultivation of flax until the weaving of linen (same opening hours as the mill).
The Wildbach Tour, a walking tour in the Alpbachtal valley, proceeds also past the Weikart Mill. It starts at the town hall of Alpbach. Across the Mühlbach bridge it proceeds along the middle high route past the gorgeous Kramerhof farm and further towards Inneralpbach, past the idyllically located Weikart Mill until the former Sport Conny shop. This 4 km long hike takes 1.5 hours (ascent: 182 m, descent: 159 m).
