In the old town of Innsbruck, not far away from the Golden Roof, an old building houses the Municipal Archive and Museum of the Alpine Town. The historic collections of the Municipal Archive (Stadtarchiv Innsbruck) offer insight into sources, documents and publications which concern about social, economic, touristic and corporate history of the town.
Among others, the confirmation of the town law of Innsbruck from 1239, the oldest municipal charter, can be found here. The collection of the Municipal Archive also comprises 100,000 photos which document the history of Innsbruck: Most of them are already digitalised, just as the poster collection. Therefore a reading room and several PCs are available. The journal "Zeit - Raum - Innsbruck", dedicated to current topics and to research results, completes the offer.
The connected Innsbruck Town Museum (Stadtmuseum Innsbruck), however, shows a permanent exhibition of selected documents of the Municipal Archive. The exhibition in winter and spring 2023/24 "Disposing of Hitler. From the cellar to the archive" shows a local version of the successful exhibition of the same name, held by the Haus der Geschichte Österreich in Vienna last year.
