Ried im Oberinntal

Ried, which in German means “marshy land”, is located in the upper part of the Inntal valley.

Altitude: 876 m asl

Surrounded by the mountains of the Oetztal Alps and the Samnaun mountain range, there is the holiday resort of Ried. This is where the roads to the sunny plateau Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and to Passo Resia in South Tyrol/Italy cross. Many Bronze Age and Roman findings point to the early settlement of this area.

Particularly the bathing lake (Rieder Badesee) as well as the beautiful mountains attract plenty of people and cast a spell over them in summertime. The offer includes various hiking paths such as the so-called “Herrensteig”, another attraction is the 100 m high “Fallende Bach” waterfall close to the Anton-Renk refuge. Down in the valley, there is the “Via Claudia” path snaking along the Inn river in the direction of Tösens. The funicular over the gorge of the Fendler Bach river, however, is not for the faint-hearted.

One single skipass, in other words “Ski6″, makes you access six skiing areas, including the Kaunertal Glacier skiing area as well as the slopes of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. At Ried im Oberinntal there are 10.5 km of ski slopes in the family skiing area Ried-Prutz-Fendels. Also very popular are the four cross-country ski tracks, snaking in the Kaunertal valley (26 km classic, 27 km skating).

Our recommendation: Ried has been built round a tower, from which the transit route was surveiled. Archduke Sigmund, called “der Münzreiche”, had this tower transformed into a hunting castle named “Siegmundsried”. Still today in the entrance hall there are interesting emblems and wall paintings dating back to the 16th century!
