Kirchdorf in Tirol

The village Kirchdorf in Tirol is located in the Leukental valley at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountain chain.

Altitude: 641 m asl

The name of Kirchdorf in Tirol, not to be confused with Kirchberg in Tirol, derives from the old church of the village, as “Kirche” means church in German. At the place where the church stands today, already in the 2nd and 3rd century AD a Roman villa was located, which was destroyed in the time of the migration period. The first church was mentioned in 870 AD, which was replaced by a new Gothic building in the 12th century. In the 19th century, this construction was pillaged by Bavarian troops, and rebuilt in its present shape from 1815-1816.

Kirchdorf in Tirol consists of several hamlets and dispersed settlements, extending in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. Also great parts of the Wilder Kaiser mountain chain is part of the municipal territory. Its location in close vicinity to this mountain chain also influences summer tourism, as these beautiful mountains offer a large number of climbing and hiking tours. Moreover the Grossache river basin was re-naturalized and has become a really popular destination for promenaders and cyclists.

In winter, however, the skiing areas St. Johann in Tirol and Steinplatte are within easy reach. These skiing areas, as well as the Kirchdorf ski lifts, are connected to the 3-Country Leisure Arena, offering 171 km of ski slopes and 61 state-of-the-art lift facilities in North Tyrol, Salzburg and Bavaria. For those who love cross-country skiing, there are the famous Kaiserloipen trails. After exhausting outdoor activities we recommend you to visit the Kaiserquell WellnessCenter with pools, saunas and massages to revitalize your fatigued muscles.

Our recommendation: recommendable excursion destinations are the mountain pine distillery in the nature reserve Kaiserbachtal, and a hike to the mysterious “Teufelsgasse”, a legendary gorge.
