Obergurgl-Hochgurgl

The charming mountain village Obergurgl and the hotel settlement Hochgurgl captivate thanks to their Tyrolean flair.

Altitude: 1,930 - 2,150 m asl

Obergurgl has got much more to offer than you might imagine at first sight. Located at 1,930 m asl, Obergurgl is considered to be the highest located church village of Austria. By “accident” already in 1931 this village became quite famous due to an emergency landing of the Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard with his stratosphere balloon. Still today a monument on the Gurgler Ferner mountain recalls this event. Of course this monument is a popular hiking destination.

The hotel settlement Hochgurgl is located higher, along the road to Timmelsjoch pass (2,474 m asl). Those who have not been to Tyrol before, must drive along this route, which is one of the most popular high alpine roads, is a unique experience for all those who love driving convertibles, motorbikes or even mountain bikes. It is a perfect route for a day trip, not only due to the breathtaking panoramic view als well as clear mountain streams lining the road. Moreover along the road there are cosy taverns, perfect to stop for a bite to eat. What about “Schlutzkrapfen” or a hearty and tasty Tyrolean “Gröstel”?

In winter Obergurgl-Hochgurgl turns into a great ski resort. The view from the peak of the Wurmkogel, which is the highest point of the skiing area (3,082 m asl), is really amazing and the surrounding mountains are within one’s reach. Moreover this skiing area has got some 110 km of ski slopes and 24 lift facilities to offer. And in case one day you need a change, there is a new indoor-golf course in Obergurgl, boasting a surface of about 700 sqm.

Our recommendation: the “Oetztal Card” (available as 3-, 7- and 10-day ticket at the tourist information offices and lift facilities) provides several special concessions and discounts!
