The holiday resort Karres is located at the foot of the Tschirgant, a 2,370 m high mountain in the surroundings of Imst.

Altitude: 830 m asl

The sunny village of Karres is located on an elevation above the Inn river. Settled already in Roman times, in Mediaeval times it gained in importance due to mining, which lasted up to the 19th century. This is also revealed by the emblem of the municipality, as the silver and black peaks illustrate the Tschirgant, the local mountain of Karres, while mallets represent mining, which was of utmost importance for the village.

The surrounding mountains are the main excursion destinations in summer. Plenty of hiking trails show you the surroundings of Karres from their bright side! Popular destinations are the Karrer Alm (1,613 m asl) or the Karröster Alm (1,467 m asl) pastures, from where you can proceed to the top of the Tschirgant mountain (2,370 m asl). For the first variant, schedule about 4 hours to achieve the summit: first you walk via serpentines to the so-called Lehnetalgraben, and by walking across spruce forests you reach the Karrer Alm alpine pasture. Afterwards the trail takes you on the saddle and further on to the top of the Tschirgant. Moreover Karres is located along the famous Way of St. James and also along the Inn cycle path, which is perfect for those who love this sports. This trail takes from the Swiss Engadine to Passau in Bavaria and is characterised by soft gradients. Also the cycle path Via Claudia Augusta along the ancient Roman road, finally taking to Venice, is perfect for a pleasant afternoon on your bikes. And for the little ones, there are several children’s playgrounds in the municipality of Karres and surroundings.

If you are interested in arts and culture, we invite you to make a tour across the village. Still today two miners’ buildings with Gothic elements remind on the period of time in which mining was an important metier in the village. The St. Stephanus church in the centre of Karres has been mentioned for the first time in 1447, the church steeple presents the year 1583. Particularly worth to be visited in the interior are the side altars, the pulpit and the war memorial.

Our recommendation: in summer the concerts of the local music group are a popular meeting point for young and old.
