The name Biberwier derives from the beavers that lived in this area of the Zugspitz Arena up to the year 1800.

Altitude: 989 m asl

The municipality of Biberwier is located at the southern end of the basin of Lermoos along the former Roman Road Via Claudia Augusta, the reason for which Biberwier has already been settled in that age. From Middle Ages to the 20th century along the so-called Silberleithe there was the largest mine plant of the Ausserfern region, where calamine, lead ore and zinc ore were mined. The emblem of Biberwier shows a beaver for the name of the village as well as a wheel referring to transport and mining as originally important branches.

Today Biberwier is a popular holiday resort in the area of the Zugspitz Arena, offering numerous hiking and cycling possibilities. Popular hiking destinations are the Bergleskopf mountain (2,577 m asl, 6-hours’ tour), the Biberkopf mountain (2,599 m asl) and the Schachtkopf mountain (1,642 m asl, 4-hours’ round trail). On the Silberleithen hiking trail you can experience the former mining area. This 7 km long round trail includes an altitude difference of 650 m. Equally popular are the three lakes of the Fernpass located in the south of the village: the lakes Blindsee, Mittersee and Weissensee. In the village itself there are two tennis courts and a horse riding stable, completing the leisure time offer.

In winter the village offers the small but mighty skiing area Marienbergbahnen with 9 km of ski runs, the children’s area “Biberland” and a half pipe for snowboarders. The valley station is easily accessible by a free shuttle service. Those who prefer a more sizeable skiing resort can look forward to six further skiing areas, together representing the famous Zugspitz Arena. Modern snow-making equipment make skiing possible until late spring. And the 142 km of ski slopes are able to satisfy all your needs! Also horse riding in the fairytale winter landscape or cross-country skiing along the snow-sure Weissensee trail or the 110 km long trail network of the region make your winter holidays varied.

Our recommendation: the Biberwier summer sledge track (1.3 km) starts at the intermediate station of the Marienberg funicular. Embedded into the beautiful landscape of the Marienberg mountain, it takes you down 40 curves and an altitude drop of 165 m to the valley station. Enjoy yourselves!
