Ötztal Cycle Route

The Ötztal Mountain Bike Trail, also called Ötztal Cycle Route, connects Haiming am Inn with Sölden in the back Ötztal valley: From there mountain bikers can take the uphill route to the Gaislachalm - racing cyclists, however, can climb the 2,509 m high Timmelsjoch via the Ötztal Road and the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road.

Not without reason the Ötztal valley is one of the top bike destinations, not only for mountain bikers but also for racing cyclists, who measure their performance every year in late summer at the Ötztal Cycle Marathon across 4 alpine passes. The cycle route through the Ötztal valley, which we present here, is more leisurely. The cycle route R11 starts west of Haiming, near Schlierenzau. We cross the Inn river and cycle to the village of Ötztal Bahnhof and from there along gravel paths until the mouth of the Ötztal Ache stream. Passing the “Area 47” leisure park we reach Sautens after a few kilometres, the first village in the lower Ötztal valley. On the western side of the valley we continue through meadows and woods past Oetz to Tumpen and Umhausen.

The narrow valley makes it necessary that the following section runs on the Ötztal Road - near Winkeln the route continues again on dirt roads to Längenfeld and Huben. Sölden is the next destination and this is also the end of the actual cycle path. What the R11 route offers afterwards is a crisp mountain bike route up to the Gaislachalm - 600 metres of altitude difference on a distance of 7.5 km. This is followed by a rapid descent towards Zwieselstein, from there the route proceeds on the Gurglerstraße road and gravel paths up to Obergurgl and further on to the Langtalereckhütte mountain hut at 2,480 m a.s.l. (another 1,000 m uphill). Alternatively, from Sölden and Obergurgl you can also reach the 2,509 m high Timmelsjoch via the high alpine road.
