Schmirn

The municipal area of Schmirn extends in the south to the Tux Main Ridge with the striking Olperer mountain (3,476 m asl).

Altitude 1,407 m asl

Schmirn and its large number of hamlets includes a vast municipal territory extending to the Tux pre-Alps and the Tux Main Ridge. Parts of the locality St. Jodok belong to the village, while the southern parts belong to the village of Vals in Nordtirol. Up to the year 1926 even Hintertux in the rearmost Zillertal valley was part of the municipality Schmirn. Via the Tuxer Joch pass the Romans invaded this area and farmed the land, which is testified by a bronze plaque found in this place. The Schmirntal valley, a side valley of the Wipptal valley, has been mentioned for the first time in the 13th century as “Vallis Smurne”.

One of the highlights is the herb garden of Schmirn, which offers various types of medical herbs, spice-herbs and Alpine flowers. It is accessible via a wooden path from Toldern. The herbs are also sold, moreover on the opposite there is the Gattererhof farm offering agricultural products. However, at 1,750 m asl above Holzeben there is the Mariahilf pilgrimage church, which is called “Zur Kalten Herberge” (cold shelter), illustrated on the emblem of the village. Starting at the parking space at Holzeben you can reach this church on foot. There is also a legend regarding this little church, telling about a hunter that found a woman and her child seeking shelter from the weather under a spruce. The hunter called it “a cold shelter”. In the surroundings there is considered to be a healing spring…

In summer the fantastic mountains in the surroundings attract a large number of hikers, e.g to the 2,341 m high peak of the Sumpfkopf or to the Tuxerjoch refuge (2,310 m asl), where after a hike of 2.5 hours you are rewarded with a fabulous view on the Tux glaciers. An equally worthwhile destination is Lake Ramsgrubner at 2,000 m asl, with the Schöberspitze mountain rising above. If the weather is fine, from the top of this mountain you can even see the Ortles mountain in South Tyrol! Lake Ramsgrubner can be reached from Toldern in a hike of 2.5 km and 500 m of altitude difference. A curiosity: this lake is also known for “natursim in the mountains”, if you dare a jump into the refreshing waters! In winter the 3 km long natural toboggan run Kalte Herberge goes past the homonymous pilgrimage church.

Our recommendation: with the herbs of the herb garden of Schmirn, in the adjacent tavern local delicacies such as bread or bacon are produced. You absolutely have to taste!
