Reith bei Seefeld

The holiday resort of Reith is located at the foot of the Reither Spitze (2,374 m asl) at the southern edge of the Seefeld plateau.

Altitude: 1,180 m asl

The name of the village dates back to the Middle Ages and means “deforested place” in German language. The settlements Auland, Gschwandt, Krinz, Leithen, Mühlberg as well as the scattered village of Reith form the municipality of Reith bei Seefeld, located - as the name reveals - in the Olympic Region Seefeld.

Since 1350 AD in this village fossil oil has been extracted, which is used to produce remedies. The Tyrolean fossil oil - in German called “Tiroler Steinöl” - is obtained from oil shale and is today mainly used in the health sector and spa, e.g. to alleviate rheumatism. But why is it therapeutic? The active agents stem from prehistoric marine animals and plants in the slate, in other words, it bears the agents of the sea. There is also a legend regarding the extraction of fossil oil. A long time ago there was a struggle between two giants, in which the giant Thyrsus wanted to defend his territory against the invader Haymo. In this fight Thyrsus was fatally wounded and from this point in this area the healing “Thyrsus blood”, how fossil oil is also called, has been extracted. Thyrsus is even illustrated on the emblem of the village.

Active holidays and sightseeing can be perfectly combined at Reith bei Seefeld. The Bee Nature Trail provides an insight into the fascinating life of bees. The path comprised six stations dedicated to the honeybee as well as three stations dealing with the life of the wild bee. Along this trail there is also the first “Bee Hotel” of Austria, giving a realist 279ic and practical insight into populated beehive with individual habitation for different types of bees. However, along the “Culture Trail” you come across historic monuments, giving an insight into the history of the surroundings.

Our recommendation: feel like an Olympic athlete and ski in the skiing area Olympic Region Seefeld! Moreover there are approx. 260 km of cross-country ski trails.
