Obsteig, the most western municipality of the Mieminger plateau, is composed of scattered villages and hamlets.
Altitude: 991 m asl
At the foot of the Mieminger mountain chain there is Obsteig, the most western and highest located municipality of the Mieminger plateau. Also the name of the village refers to this fact, deriving from “ob der Steigung”, which means “above the ascent”. In 1336 AD the village has been mentioned for the first time as “Schneggenhausen”, one century later the name changed into “Miemingerperg ob des Steigs” and in 1660 into “Obsteig”. By the way: Johann Haller (1844-1906), north pole explorer and forester in Obsteig, is sepulchred here.
The village is a popular starting point for hikes and trips in the surroundings, such as to Klamm Castle between Obsteig and Fronhausen. Once upon a time it was meant to be a sentinel for the transport route of Mötz and has also been presented as “Sonnenstein Castle” in the German TV serial “Der Bergdoktor” (The Mountain Doctor). From this castle, a short trail takes you to the 25 m high waterfall of the Klammbach river. Another popular excursion destination are the larch meadows at Obsteig, extending to the 1,129 m high Holzleiten saddle. The meadows have been put under natural protection in 1981. These two sights are also illustrated on the emblem of the village: the black mural crown represents Klamm Castle, and the green conifer stands for the beautiful larch meadows. Also worth to be visited is the parish church of Obsteig, built between 1760 to 1780 and dedicated to St. Josef. The beautiful frescoes, the altar painting and the carved figurines are all pieces of art realised by local artists.
Obsteig offers a small but mighty skiing area extending up to 1,500 m asl on the slopes of the Grünberg mountain. The ski instructors of the local ski school are pleased to help you making the first steps on snow or refining your skiing technique. Moreover there are 40 km of winter hiking trails and numerous cross-country ski tracks snaking in the beautifully snow-capped landscape. A unique experience is also a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride! In summer a lift takes you right into the heart of the mountains and to the starting point for various tours. Several trails round Obsteig, such as the Wankspitze fixed rope route, have been awarded with the Tyrolean seal of quality for hiking trails “Tiroler Bergwegegütesiegel”. Furthermore there are an indoor pool, two tennis courts and possibilities to try horse-riding.
Our recommendation: if you would like to make a comfortable walk we recommend you the senior round trail (Seniorenrundwanderweg) taking you across the meadows and forests of Obsteig.
