Nature Park Zillertal Alps

This high-mountain nature park extends among green valleys and white glaciers.

The high-mountain nature park of the Zillertal Alps has been founded in 2001. It comprises a area of about 2,500 sqkm and represents the largest protective network in the Alps. In the south this nature park borders on the Vedrette di Ries Nature Park. In the east the nature park starts with the Zillergründl, while in the west it ends with the Zamser Grund. The Zillertal Alps Nature Park is in the true sense of the word a high-mountain nature park, which extends from an altitude of 1,000 m asl (Ginzling) to 3,510 m asl (Gran Pilastro). The municipalities which are included in the nature park are Brandberg, Finkenberg and Mayrhofen.

The nature park is characterised by its varied flora and fauna, that can be discovered when hiking and mountaineering, such as the crossed viper, mountain sheep and chamois as well as cotton grass and globeflower. You can explore the Zillertal Alps Nature Park e.g. on the Berliner high alpine path, which crosses the nature park. Eight refuges offer the possibility of overnight stays. Moreover you can enjoy cycling or walking across an intact natural landscape. Theme paths as well as the visitor's centre provide useful information on the nature park and the evolution of glaciers as well as on mountain farmers.

In 2008 the Ginzling nature park visitors' centre was completed and informs visitors in a family-friendly way about the nature park. The exhibitions have been designed virtually and multimedia-based, which makes it possible to experience the museum interactively. For this reason a visit to the visitor's centre is very special also for kids!
