In East Tyrol, the family-friendly Water Experience Trail Defereggen is dedicated to the immense power of water.
At the eastern edge of St. Jakob in Defereggen, an adventure path on the topic of water starts. It proceeds on the valley floor always along the Schwarzach river without any considerable ascents. Here, in the heart of the High Tauern National Park and the surrounding gigantic mountains with their snow fields and glaciers, water is an important habitat and a significant topic.
In about 2.5 hours, the Water Experience Trail Defereggen (Wasser Erlebnisweg Defereggen) leads you through mystic fenlands, to a sulphur spring, gurgling mountain brooks, a source of healing and drinking water, the waterfalls of the Stallenbach brook and to a mill. 31 information boards tell interesting things about water, its influence on the landscape and effect. What is the superpower of this element? How do amphibians live? And what’s about the phenomenon of the Red Rocks?
The Water Experience Trail Defereggen is an adventure for the whole family. It is topped off with a natural playground and a large outdoor laboratory. Here, at 1,400 m asl., animals and plants of the mountain regions can be observed. The path is 4.8 km long (in each direction) and proceeds from St. Jakob to Maria Hilf. There is also a shorter route in the form of a circular path (2 km).
