MTB tour on the Sendersweg

The path through the Senderstal valley connects Grinzens with the Kemater Hut and the Pichler Hut at the foot of the Kalkkögel mountains in the Stubai Alps: Our tour leads up to 2,000 m a.s.l.

Our MTB tour in the Stubai Alps starts at Kematen in Tirol, in the Inntal valley west of Innsbruck. After passing through the village, at the crossroads we turn left on the Axamer Strasse road and cycle uphill. After the hamlet of Zifres we go on the Gruben Path, which leads through the hamlet of Bachl to Grinzens (950 m a.s.l.). At the bus stop Kohlstatt we turn into the Fernereben Path. Here starts the trail to the Kemater Mountain Hut, marked as MTB route no. 555. Soon after, the asphalted road changes into gravel and leads deeper and deeper into the valley, along the banks of the Sendersbach stream (road subject to toll for cars).

Surrounded by the forest we continue to cycle through the Senderstal valley, pass two chapels, and steeper sections alternate with more gentle ones. At 1,450 m a.s.l. we see the first clearing at the junction to the Salfeins Mountain Hut. The next section gets steep again, and we arrive at the Kemater Mountain Hut (1,670 m a.s.l.). This is the end point of MTB route no. 555. Anyhow, there is the possibility to continue towards the Adolf Pichler Hut (1,980 m a.s.l.). This short stretch is really steep and you have to push your bike. In the final section, the gradient is considerably reduced by serpentines. The magnificent view of the Kalkkögel mountains, which can particularly be appreciated in the afternoon light, is for sure the highlight of this MTB tour.
