Summer Solstice Fires Zugspitz Arena
Info
Description
Every year in Ehrwald, hundreds of so-called 'mountain burners' prepare for the summer solstice in the Zugspitz Arena months in advance. Rock faces are measured, designs are created, and up to 700 sacks are filled with a mixture of sawdust and rapeseed oil. When the solstice fires are finally lit at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres on the evening of the longest day of the year, physical fitness is essential.
From the valley, the impressive fire designs – which according to ancient tradition drive away evil spirits and demons – are clearly visible on the Wetterstein Massif, the Mieminger Chain, and the Lechtal Alps. The walking paths in Moos offer a particularly impressive panoramic view, where the glowing images can be seen across the entire valley basin.
