The Nordkette Vertical Trail Run is an annual mountain race from Innsbruck up to the Seegrube. The 6.7-kilometre route, covering 1,332 vertical metres on steep trails and alpine paths, demands a lot from participants, both physically and technically. Runners start at the Löwenhaus station of the Hungerburgbahn funicular, cross the River Inn, and run past the Alpine Zoo up to Hungerburg. Then the steep cable car trail to Seegrube begins.
A classic feature in the last third of the route is the "Stairway to Heaven" staircase. The fastest trail runners are awarded the titles Nordkettenkaiser and Nordkettenkaiserin.
