Lake Obernberger is a mountain lake located only a stone’s throw from Obernberg am Brenner, near the Italian border. The lake covers an area of about 20 hectares and its water level is subject to fluctuations of up to 7 metres. Lake Obernberger, featuring an excellent water quality, is fed by the subterranean Obernberger river. In order to preserve its water quality, bathing has been prohibited a considerable time ago and since 1935 lake Obernberger is protected.
For families Lake Obernberger (see pic), considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes of Tyrol, represents an attractive destination, as the hike to the lake is not too long. Moreover you can enjoy hiking along one of the paths winding in the surroundings of the lake. Lake Obernberger can be best experienced in a rowboat.
What is particularly remarkable is its richness in fish: In the crystal clear water there are brook trouts, brown trouts, chars, rainbow trouts and many other fish. Fishing is forbidden here! Lake Obernberger consists of two parts, which have been separated by a rock avalanche in prehistoric times. On rests of the rock slide the chapel Maria am See has been built, which is accessible via a bridge.
