In the heart of a fabulous protected area, at an altitude of 915 m, you come across Lake Piburg.
In the heart of the impressive peaks of the Oetztal Alps and the Oetztal Nature Park, there is Lake Piburg, reflecting the mountains of the surroundings on its surface. Already in 1929 it has been put under natural protection, and in the course of time the protected environs have been enlarged.
The origins of the lake date back to a massive rockfall subsequent to the Ice Age. However, there are several legends ranking about its origins, which always focus on the same facts. Once upon a time, there used to be a farmstead, whose inhabitants committed outrage. In order to punish them, the farm was flooded by the waters of a newly emerged lake. Even a dragon is considered to have raged and rioted in its waters. For centuries, a healing effect was attached to the waters of Lake Piburg, which resulted in physicians prescribing some “bathing days”.
Lake Piburg is one of the warmest lakes for bathing in Tyrol, as despite of its altitude at 915 m it reaches up to 25 degrees C. If you prefer fishing, you can purchase a fishing ticket in the municipality of Oetz. Lake Piburg can also be reached on various hiking trails, starting from Oetz, Sautens, Habichen and Piburg. Ideal for a halt is the lakeside with restaurant and boat rental. In the restaurant you can by the way taste freshly prepared trouts! Also in winter months, Lake Piburg is a popular excursion destination, as there are 20 km of winter hiking trails snaking in the surroundings. The toboggan run from Piburg and ice skating on the frozen lake are also very popular.
