Aurach bei Kitzbühel 2010

Aurach bei Kitzbühel

About 5 km in the south of Kitzbühel, there is the holiday resort of Aurach.

Altitude: 846 m asl

Unteraurach, Oberaurach and several scattered settlements together form the municipality of Aurach bei Kitzbühel (see pic). Once upon a time in this area mining was the main source of revenue, especially in the area of the Kelchalm pasture. The two crossed hammers on the emblem of the village still remind on copper mining, which in this area already existed in the second millennium BC. Above the two hammers, the steeple is depicted. Still today the appearance of the village is characterised by century-old farms.

A popular attraction in the municipal area is the animal park of Aurach, offering the largest open-air enclosure of Tyrol, located at an altitude of 1,100 m asl. Some 200 animals such as red deer, ibexes, wild boars and lynxes, but also other more exotic animals such as lamas and yaks live in this park. Moreover there is a little zoo where kids can experience guinea pigs, sheep and other animals at close quarters. However, there are several popular attractions more, as the village is located right in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. One of these popular destination is the Oberkaseralm refuge in the Kelchalmgraben (see pic), which can perfectly be combined with the Tristkogel fixed rope route…

Also in winter the mountain range of the Kitzbühel Alps determines activities in the village and surroundings. There is not only the Kitzbühel skiing area and the natural sledge track Kelchalm, but also a vast network of cross-country ski tracks. Thinking of the famous “Streif” ski slope, or on the fact that Kitzbühel has been the homeland of ski sports for nearly 120 years now, you really feel like going there!

Our tip: Theme paths such as the Erbhofweg, Kapellenweg or the circular path are perfect for promenading.
