Kühtai

Due to its position at 2,000 m asl, Kühtai is highly recommendable for persons suffering from allergies and asthma.

Featuring only approx. 10 inhabitants, Kühtai (see pic) is a component locality of the municipality of Silz. It is one of the smallest localities in Tyrol, located right in the heart of the Stubai Alps in beautiful Sellrain valley. The name of the village probably derives from a farm called “Chutney”, which has already existed in 1288 AD. In the 17th century this farm has been transformed into a hunting château and later on into a château castle, which was considered to be the basis for a unique holiday destination.

Not only those who suffer from from allergies and asthma are right here in Kühtai, but also those who seek fresh mountain air and a unique alpine panorama, as it is perfect for spending recreative and unforgettable vacations. The “Drei Seen” cable car keeps its doors open also in summer and takes you to a perfect starting point for high-alpine excursions. But why is this cable car called “Drei Seen” (three lakes)? There are three lakes in the surroundings that can easily be reached on foot, which are the Finstertaler reservoir, Lake Plenderle and Lake Hirscheben. Moreover, in the second half of June alpine rhododendron bloom and in this period of time the slopes around the village are really striking due to their unique colour.

Another interesting fact about Kühtai is that it is the highest located ski resort throughout Austria! Most commonly the ski slopes start directly in front of the hotel doors. For this reason here winter sports flourish from December to May. The Kühtai lift facilites take you to an altitude of 2,520 m asl, where 40 km of ski slopes start, leading down to the village. No matter if you love skiing, snowboarding or carving or whether you prefer tobogganing… fun and action are guaranteed. Several times a week the Hochalter chair lift takes you to the top, where you can ski down the illuminated slope. Keep moving!

Our tip: There are also several events taking place in Kühtai. In summer for example, there is the so called “Knappenfest” in the Wörgetal valley. And in autumn there is a popular sports event: In Sellrain there is the “Kühtai Drei-Seen-Lauf”, a running competition to the Finstertaler reservoir!
