Lake Lichtsee is located in the north of the village Obernberg am Brenner and its water quality has been defined excellent. Featuring a surface of 4 hectares, Lake Lichtsee is one of the largest lakes at this altitude. The unique high alpine scenery surrounding it is reflected by the water. In this place nature is still unspoilt and for this reason it also represents the habitat of numerous animal species. There are for example dragonflies hoovering above the surface of the lake, as well as numerous fish species, splashing around in the water.
Lake Lichtsee (see pic) represents a popular hiking destination with families, as the ascent is rather easy. A walk from the valley (1,400 m asl) to the lake takes about two and a half hours. Larches and spurces line the path leading to the lake, starting from the valley, and blueberries and cranberries grow in abundance at the southern lakeside. Once reached the lake you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view on the surrounding mountains, including the Dolomites that in 2009 have officially been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. And the Tribulaun mountain seems to be within one’s grasp… amazing!
However, only the most brave dare jumping into the water, which even in summer does not exceed a water temperature of 14 degrees. A perfect place for a real refreshment!
