The lake (see pic) is located in the north east of the municipality of Heiterwang in the Ammergau Alps. The alpine lake is fed by two overground affluents and its runoff is a 300 m long connection canal, leading to Lake Plansee. Already Emperor Maximilian I. often spent his leisure time fishing at Lake Heiterwang, which still today is popular thanks to its richness in fish.
Popular is also a signposted course leading round the lake. Moreover there are several other attractive hiking paths, e.g. a hiking path to the peak of the Thaneller mountain on 2,341 m asl. The unique atmosphere at the lakeside is perfectly suitable for a horseback ride as well as a ride with the horse-drawn sleigh express. Moreover the surroundings of the lake offer also the possibility to play beach volley and tennis as well as miniature golf. For surfers and sailors the lake offers great wind conditions and also for canoeists the lake is a great place to be. Particularly divers, who appreciate the lake for its rich underwater flora and fauna, benefit from the excellent water quality of the lake.
Another main attraction at Lake Heiterwang are the MS Margarethe and MS Wilhelm, two passenger ships which take you from one lakeside to the other, in order to make you experience Lake Heiterwang from a very different point of view. In wintertime the surroundings of Lake Heiterwang become a meeting point for cross-country skiers - over 100 km of cross-country ski runs are waiting for you…
