Lake Heiterwang

Beeing situated at the foot of Mt. Thaneller in the Ammergau Alps, Lake Heiterwang is above all famous for its richness in fish

Lake Heiterwang, that's to say the lake of the village of Heiterwang, is fed by two overground affluents and its runoff is a 300 m long connection canal, leading to Lake Plansee. The two lakes are used as reservoirs by the Reutte Power Station. Already Emperor Maximilian I. often spent his leisure time fishing at Lake Heiterwang, and still today it is known for its richness in fish.

Today, the signposted course leading round the lake is very popular, moreover there are several other attractive hiking paths and possibilities to play beach volley, tennis and miniature golf. Nordic walker and mountain bikers can be seen at the shores of the Heiterwanger See. For surfers, the lake offers great wind conditions, and divers appreciate the rich underwater flora and fauna. The waters are freely accessible if you would like to take a swim, whereas divers need a day ticket.

A main attraction at Lake Heiterwang and Lake Plansee are the MS Margarethe and MS Wilhelm, two passenger ships which take you from one lakeside to the other. In winter, the surroundings become a meeting point for Nordic skiers, with over 100 km of cross-country ski runs.
