Oetztal Heritage and Outdoor Museum

The Local Heritage Museum of the Oetztal valley provides interesting information about farmers’ lives in the valley

At Lehn in Längenfeld, you can revive ancient periods: The Oetztal Heritage and Outdoor Museum (Ötztaler Heimat- und Freilichtmuseum) shows items of daily use up to the Fifties, illustrates farmer's way of life in the Oetztal valley, and therefore becomes a peasant-social museum. The "Ötztaler Heimatverein", founded in 1965, is the supporting association of the museum.

Its centre is represented by a so-called Paarhof farm, the most widely-spread type of farmstead in the Oetztal valley, with its granary and agricultural devices that are driven by the power of the nearby Rio Lehn brook. Next to the farm, there is a log house dating back to the mid-17th century, a sawmill and stock-mill of 1700, as well as a swinging hut for flax elaboration. By the way, did you know that the dialect that of the valley is registered as Immaterial Cultural Heritage in Austria?

Some years ago, the nearby "Schiedlas Haus" could be purchased: During its restoration and adaption to the "Oetztal's Memory Archives" (Gedächtnisspeicher Ötztal), beautiful late-Gothic elements were laid open. On its three floors you can discover different exhibitions, whereas the attic is a popular event location. The Oetztal Heritage and Outdoor Museum has been awarded the seal of quality for museums by the ICOM (International Council of Museums), and represents one of the 9 power places of the Längenfeld Source of Strength.
