Hart im Zillertal
The municipality of Hart im Zillertal is located opposite Fügen in the anterior Zillertal valley.
Altitude: 660 m asl
The municipal area of Hart im Zillertal is made up of the hamlets Niederhart, Helfenstein, Haselbach and Kohlstatt at the bottom of the valley, the mountain farms Holdernach and the church village Hart. The term “Hart” derives from the Old High German and means “forest dwindled by clearing”. The black cupola illustrated on the emblem of the village shows that it has once been a centre of charcoal production, whereas the red and yellow rays stand for heat, embers and fire.
Thanks to several sights and various offers regarding leisure time activities, at Hart there is no boredom! The Schleier waterfall is the highest waterfall of the Zillertal valley with a drop hight of 91 metres. In its surroundings, there are two theme paths that are particularly interesting: on the one hand there is a bird’s trail along which you cannot only observe various bird species, but also learn more about 44 local bird species thanks to the information provided on information panels. Schedule about 2.5 hours for this trail, starting from the Almdiele tavern. On the other hand there is a nature trail with 15 stages, made up of two connected circular trails of 2 km (northern circuit) and 2.5 km (southern cirquit, Schleier waterfall). Opposite the village, at Fügen, there is the Spieljoch at 1,783 m asl, where you can find the highest located show gallery of Austria. Reachable in a 40-minutes’ walk from the mountain station of the Spieljochbahn funicular, in the Julius gallery you can retrace the 400-year long history of mining of this area…
While in summer the Zillertal Alps attract hikers from all over and make them scale the Rastkogel or Kreuzjoch mountains, in winter Hart impresses with its vicinity to the two skiing areas located in the anterior part of the Zillertal valley. The comfortable Fügen-Spieljoch skiing area offers a snow park with half pipe for snowboarders and takes you at 2,050 m asl. By the connection of the areas Hochfügen and Hochzillertal several years ago, the largest ski carousel of the valley came into being: Ski-optimal Hochfügen Hochzillertal offers a total of 181 km of ski runs! To complete the offer, you can also enjoy fishing, cycling, inline skating, paragliding and playing tennis and miniature golf.
Our recommendation: to those who love culture we absolutely recommend a visit to the Saint Bartholomew parish church dating back to the 18th century and built in Gothic construction style. Moreover there is a pilgrimage chapel at the Hartberg mountain, characterised by a bulbous spire.
