Heiterwang

Altitude: 994 m a.s.l.

The idyllic village of Heiterwang is located in the south of Reutte along the road to the Reschenpass and the Fernpass, which transformed this settlement into a place of handling, posting station and horse changing early in time. The name of the village originates from the term "Ayterwanch", which means "stinging nettle meadow".

Two lakes can be found near Heiterwang: Lake Heiterwang in the municipal area is connected with Lake Plansee, which belongs in part to the neighbouring Breitenwang, by a canal. In ancient times, Lake Heiterwang was popular due to its richness in fish, attracting even Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Sigismund, Archduke of Austria. Today, it is above all popular for the variety of activities you can choose from, ranging from rowing, surfing and swimming to fishing and diving.

On its shores, there are a 6 km long jogging course, a 21 km long Nordic Walking trail, and the Moor Educational Trail, which is pushchair-friendly. Due to its location, Heiterwang is considered to be the gate to the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena. This region, dominated by the nearly 3,000 m high Zugspitze, is a popular hiking area in summer. In winter, however, it transforms into a great ski region which includes seven skiing areas around the northernmost glacier of the Alps.
