Berwang (see pic), whose name derives from the German words “Bär” (bear) and “Wang” (meadow), is a real natural treasure. Brand, Bichlbach, Kleinstockach, Gröben, Mitteregg and Rinnen are the localities that belong to Berwang. Some 1,200 plant species form the most varied fauna of the Western Alps. In the background of alpine flowers and conifers you can admire the majestic mountain peaks of the Berwangertal valley, the summit of the Heiterwand and the Zugspitze mountain.
If you would like to hike, you don’t have to go far in order to reach your starting point, as the most beautiful mountains are located right on the doorstep! However, one of the highlights in summer, beside innumerable hiking and mountainbike trails, is the swimming pool “Bärenarena Berwang” as well as the alpine herb garden and the highest located brewery of Austria. This is where natural cloudy and cask-conditioned beer is brewed with natural rock water. The Kneipp facility stimulates your circulation and also what eating and drinking is concerned you absolutely do not have to worry, as special treats like homemade wood-fired bread, homemade beer, pork hocks and fresh trouts are offered in this holiday village.
In winter, however, the natural sledge track starting from the “Jägerhaus” takes you directly into the village. Those who would like to enjoy the fairytale-like winter landscape in the valley, can explore the area along 600 km winter hiking paths. For those who love skiing, there is the skiing area Skischaukel Berwang-Bichlbach - Sonnalmbahnen, where you can enjoy 40 km of ski slopes as well as a beautiful view on the surrounding valleys. This area is connected to the ski region Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. In the meantime your kids will enjoy themselves in the so called “Braunis’ Bärenhöhle”, where they can play with other children.
Our tip: Berwang offers another advantage to its visitors: Coming from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) or Pfronten/Füssen you don’t need the Austrian motorway permit sticker. Have a good trip!
