St. Johann in Tirol 2011

St. Johann in Tirol

St. Johann in Tirol and surroundings is considered to be the former breadbasket of Tyrol.

Altitude: 670 m asl

The municipality of St. Johann in Tirol is located in a large basin of the Leukental valley, nestling in between the majestic and snow-capped mountain peaks of the Kitzbüheler Horn and Wilder Kaiser mountain. Celts, Romans and Teutons have been taking turns in this area close to Bavaria/Germany. In the 8th or 9th century the noble family of the Liuchinger took up residence in Leukenstein Castle - and that’s where the name of the valley comes from. In 1875, however, St. Johann in Tirol became even more attractive for visitors, as it was connected to the rail network. Ever since then St. Johann could be reached within a few hours from Vienna, Munich and Innsbruck.

Featuring some 8,500 inhabitants, St. Johann is one of the largest villages of North Tyrol. This is also what the offer regarding leisure time activities reflects. There is for example a double sledge track as well as a panorama swimming and recreation centre, open until 9 pm. A stunning natural spectacle, however, is the Schleier waterfall. A huge mass of water cascades down 80 m and this is a true experience! In winter the Kitzbüheler Horn offers 60 km of well-groomed ski slopes.

Are you more interested in culture than in sports? Then a museum with a gallery for contamporary arts introduces you into local history and the events taking place on a regular basis provide pleasant experiences. In January there is the “Koasalauf”, one of the biggest cross-country competitions throughout Europe, in July there is the summer festival “Jaggasn” and in August, St. Johann hosts the UCI senior cycling World Cup. In September there is the longest dining table with dumplings. Also a famous deejay, DJ Ötzi, was born in St. Johann in Tirol.

Our recommendation: St. Johann in Tirol has also got a sport airfield and a flight training school to offer. Why don’t you combine your vacation with a real adventure? Gliding, model flights, parachuting and ballooning are at choice. Enjoy flying like a bird!
