Altitude: 959 m asl
Beside St. Ulrich am Pillersee, Fieberbrunn, St. Jakob in Haus and Waidring, also Hochfilzen (see pic) belongs to the Pillersee valley. It is located at the Griessenpass (970 m asl) at the border to Salzburg and Bavaria. The economic upturn of Hochfilzen started in 1957, when a magnesite plant was established, which still today lifts this mineral.
The village is embedded into the Leoganger Steinberge and Loferer Steinberge mountains and the Kitzbühel Alps and offers a vast network of hiking and cycling trails, including 400 km and resp. 800 km of trails. Those who love climbing will feel at ease in the outdoor climbing gym Wiesensee. However, the village also boasts some sights, such as the pilgrimage chapel Maria Schnee, constructed in 1745 AD and reshaped in its present form in 1960-65.
In winter Hochfilzen is reigned by cross-country skiers and biathletes. The Biathlon World Cup competition has transformed Hochfilzen into a real biathlon stronghold. Its facilities and the respective offer are more than remarkable: cross-country ski centre with biathlon facility for tourists, weekly biathlon sports for tourists, a professional shooting range as well as a network of 110 km of cross-country ski trails for classical and skating techniques. To complete this offer, there is a sledge track and a ice stock sport rink. Those who aim higher, that is to say up into the mountains, can choose from 3 skiing areas: Waidring Steinplatte, Buchensteinwand and Fieberbrunn. Boredom? No chance!
Our tip: The PillerseeTal Card, available for 4 or 6 days, provides several discounts and special offers. Particularly recommendable to those who spend active holidays…
