Wattens is located 13 km in the east of Innsbruck and extends into the Wattental valley. Already in pre-Roman times this area was settled, which is testified by archaeological findings. In 930 AD the village was first mentioned. The emblem of the municipality shows two symbols: the globus cruciger which was the watermark of the ancient paper mill, and the silver stone that reminds on the importance of the crystal industry for the village.
That is to say, a huge economic boost came up when the glass cutter Daniel Swarovski of Bohemia settled down in this area. In 1895 he founded the crystal company Swarovski. In 1995 the Crystal Worlds were established by the Austrian artist André Heller, on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of the foundation of this company. Maybe you know the giant that decorates the entry of the Crystal Worlds? Moreover there are several excursion destinations in the municipal area, e.g. the Typewriter Museum, exhibiting 450 properly functioning model typewriters, as well as the museum of Wattens, providing an insight into the history of the village and surroundings. In the Rhaetian settlement “Himmelreich”, however, you can admire the foundations of constructions of the Rhaetian period. Much younger, but equally impressive, is the paper mill of the year 1559, the most ancient paper mill of North Tyrol.
Also those who love active sports are going to feel at ease in this pretty place, starting with the St. James Path, the famous pilgrimage path, right through the Adlerweg hiking trail, that goes past Wattens. This 280 km long trail snakes to St. Anton am Arlberg. Other popular hiking routes take you in the Alpine Park Karwendel, which is part of the Karwendel mountain chain. The largest nature park of Tyrol impresses with scenic views and the beauty of nature. If you prefer cycling, we recommend you the Inn cycle path, perfect for a pleasant day trip.
Our recommendation: two special highlights of the event calendar in the village are the legend festival as well as the event “Musik im Riesen” (music in the giant), in which the Crystal Worlds transform into a stage for chamber music.
