The municipality of Götzens, composed of the localities of Götzens, Neu-Götzens, Einödhöfe and Götznerberg, is located on a low mountain range terrace and is characterised by its rural charm. The ancient farms are in parts under monumental protection. The emblem of the village illustrates a silver squirrel with golden cones on blue background. That is the coat of arms of a noble family that resided in this area in Middle Ages.
In 1128 AD “Gecens” was officially mentioned for the first time. Around 1232 also the fortress Vellenberg, a considerable building, was part of the municipality. As it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 17th century, only remnants of this fortress are left. Also other buildings are worth to be visited, such as the Theresia chapel in the centre of the village as well as the Saint Peter and Paul church, boasting elaborate decorations and stucco works. This church is above all praised for its acoustics and is therefore a popular venue for church concerts. Those who love active holidays first of all appreciate the mountains round Götzens. Great hiking and cycling trails take you across this fairytale world and also guided walks are offered that make you explore the great outdoors. Popular excursion destinations are the alpine pastures of Mutters and the Wipptal valley. In the evening there are often concerts and folklore evenings, providing an insight into the Tyrolean culture!
In winter the nearby Axamer Lizum, a popular skiing area, determines the leisure time in this area. This is where in 1964 and 1976 some competitions of the Olympic Winter Games of Innsbruck were staged. However, also Götzens itself has got a small but mighty skiing area to offer, which is well served by the new 8-seater gondola cableway “Götzner Bahn”. From the lower terminus, where you can also find a ski school, a ski rental, a magic carpet as well as several restaurants, this lift facility takes you directly on the 1,800 m high Pfriemesköpfl mountain. By the way: with the ski pass of the “Götzner Bahn” lift facility you can also access the Muttereralm skiing area. Ice skating, curling, horse-drawn carriage rides and tobogganing from the Götzner Alm alpine pasture, and of course the guided lantern walks, complete the winter offer in the holiday resort.
Our recommendation: go for a stroll across the centre of the village and admire the numerous farms! These lushly decorated buildings are located along the Kirchstrasse, Mittelgasse and Ostergasse roads.
