Ausservillgraten and its hamlets Unterwalden, Dorf, Unterfelden, Versellerberg and Winkeltal are located at the entrance of the Villgratental valley (see pic). In this tributary valley of the Hochpustertal valley, time seemed to stand still up to the 1960s, when this area had been opened up and equipped with modern infrastructure. There is also much to see for those who are enthusiastic about culture: Hl. Gertraud von Nivelles parish church, the Genoveva chapel at the Bachlehen farm or - more modern - the gallery of the artist and gallerist Hanns Bachlechner.
Ausservillgraten was awarded with a special award for its environment, culture and apperarance of the townscape - with good reason: That’s also what you are going to say about the village when you see the range of decorative farms! Surrounded by the Tyrolean mountains and lush meadows this scenery is for example what expects you in the hiking area Winkeltal-Volkzein and Thurntaler. The Thurntaler circular path is very popular in this area, as it has been awarded within the campaign “Safe mountaineering in Tyrol”. And if one day you do not want to go hiking, try fly fishing in the Villgratenbach river.
However, the Thurntaler is also very popular in winter, as there is a skiing area featuring 45 km of ski slopes. The Hochpustertaler Bergbahnen lift facilities take you up, from where you can ski down a wide range of ski slopes. After having spent a day on snow, you can either try cross-country skiing, ice skating or come and see the Bobo childrens’ club together with your kids. Beside these offers, there is also the illuminated natural toboggan run “Tilliachalmweg” in the Winkeltal valley, which promises fun for the whole family.
Our tip: A visit to the Wurzermühle mill on the Wurzerhof farm in Winkeltal valley is really worthwhile. Also guided tours for groups are offered - this is what you can perfectly combine with a game of bowling on the bowling alley in the farm. After having overexerted yourself you can taste a potpourri of local delicacies!
