The village Ausservillgraten in the Villgratental valley represents Tyrolean culture and tradition.
Altitude: 1,286 m asl
Ausservillgraten and its hamlets Unterwalden, Dorf, Unterfelden, Versellerberg and Winkeltal are located at the entrance of the Villgratental valley. In this tributary valley of the Hochpustertal valley, time seemed to stand still up to the 1960s, when it had been opened up and equipped with modern infrastructure. There is much to see for those who are enthusiastic about culture, such as the St. Gertrude of Nivelles parish church, the Genoveva chapel at the Bachlehen farm or the gallery of the artist Hanns Bachlechner.
Ausservillgraten was awarded with a special award for its environment, culture and apperarance of the townscape - with good reason: that’s also what you are going to say about the village when you see the range of decorative farms! Surrounded by the Tyrolean mountains and lush meadows, this scenery is for example what expects you in the hiking areas Winkeltal-Volkzein and Thurntaler. The Thurntaler circular path is very popular in this area, as it has been awarded within the campaign “Safe mountaineering in Tyrol”. And if one day you do not want to go hiking, try fly fishing in the Villgratenbach river.
The Thurntaler mountain (2,404 m asl) is also very popular in winter, as there is the ski center Sillian - Hochpustertal, featuring 22.5 km of snow-sure ski slopes. The Hochpustertaler Bergbahnen lift facilities take you up, from where you can ski down a wide range of ski slopes. Furthermore you can either try cross-country skiing on the Winkeltal valley trail, ice skating, tobogganing on the 1.6 km long natural toboggan run Tilliachalmweg, or come and see the Bobo childrens’ club together with your kids.
Our recommendation: a visit to the Wurzermühle mill on the Wurzerhof farm in the Winkeltal valley is really worthwhile. Here you can perfectly combine a guided tour with a game of bowling on the bowling alley in the farm. After having overexerted yourself you can taste a potpourri of local delicacies!
