The nature park Ötztal is one of the youngest nature parks of Austria - it has been founded in 2006 an includes all protected areas of the Ötztal valley: the Obergurgler Zirbenwald, Ruhegebiet Ötztaler Alpen, Ruhegebiet Stubaier Alpen, Biosphärenpark Gurgler Kamm, Naturwald Reservat Windachtal and Achstürze Piburger See.
The nature park includes about 380 sqkm of high alpine area, one third of which is covered by glaciers and high mountains. The highest elevation is the Wildspitze mountain with 3,758 m, while the lowest point is the hamlet Ambach located in the north of Sölden on 1,270 m
The nature park Ötztal includes the southern Ötztal valley, the Venter and Gurgeltal valley as well as the popular villages Sölden, Vent and Obergurgl. However, the nature park has got many lovely places to offer, that are worth to be visited, e.g. the Vernagtferner mountain, lake Schwarzsee or the popular Swiss stone pine forest of Obergurgl. Moreover in summer months a varied event programme is offered in the nature park, which is perfect for exploring local flora and fauna in every detail.
Ötzi, the Iceman was also found in the territory of the nature park, which proves the arrival of men in high alpine area about 9,500 years ago. Explore this piece of intact land and enjoy nature in every facet.
