The patron saint of the parish church and thus the village of St. Leonhard is abbot Leonhard from Limoges in South France, which in Austria is worshiped. Located in the heart of the Pitztal valley, St. Leonhard offers a great view on the Wildspitze (3,774 m asl), which is by the way the highest mountain in Tyrol. This is where you feel right in the world of mountains.
Around St. Leonhard im Pitztal there is a vast network of hiking paths. The “Pitztal Almweg” for example connects five alpine pastures and the circular path “Venetrundwanderweg”, boasting a lenght of 30 km, leads you on 2,512 m asl. Another must-see for visitors is Lake Rifflsee, a typical moraine lake that can be reached by the Rifflsee cable car. However, of astonishing beauty is the landscape above all at high summer. And don’t worry if someone wolf-whistles you during a hike, as it might be a marmot! When you hike in this area you might come across more animals: the two ibexes on the emblem of St. Leonhard for example reveal that this animal still has its natural habitat in this area.
In winter St. Leonhard im Pitztal is an ideal winter holiday resort. One of the reasons for this is the Pitztal cable car that takes you to an altitude of 2,840 m asl. If you aim even higher, there are several lift facilities that are connected, taking you at 3,440 m asl. This is also where skiing is possible from September to June, perfect conditions included! However, those who prefer cross-country skiing can enjoy exercising on a high alpine cross-country ski track on 2,600 m asl. And in the valley, in other words in the neighbouring village of Mandarfen, there is a 34 m high ice tower, which is the highest worldwide…
Our recommendation: if your feet hurt after an exhausting walk, you can alleviate your pain by undergoing a Kneipp cure in one of the cool mountain streams. However, if you prefer a professional Kneipp cure you should visit the “Pitztaler Wasserwelt” in Stillebach.
