Pinswang

Oberpinswang, Unterpinswang, Weiler and Weisshaus form the municipality of Pinswang.

Pinswang (see pic) is located in the north of Reutte at the border of a basin-like extension of the Lech river. Its name derives from the Old High German term “Pinuz”, which means “meadow with bulrushes”. Already the Celts settled this area some 2,000 years ago, followed by the Romans who built the famous Via Claudia Augusta across the municipal territory.

If you are interested in culture you can really look forward to this history-charged place: Parts of the Roman Road Via Claudia Augusta are still walkable at the “Kratzer”. Below the peak of the Burgschrofen there is the cave castle “Schloss im Loch” (castle in the hole), which today is a ruin. In other words, a cave castle is a castle that has been built into a natural cave. Probably the overhanging rock signified protection already for people in Stone Age, testified by a cup-marked stone that has been found in this place. Established in 1250 by the Lords of Hohenegg, in later centuries this castle probably served as robber baron castle. As for the 14th century there have not been any reliable references regarding its history, there are no further details about the destination of the castle. Also the St. Ulrich parish church is worth to be visited! Constructed by the Baroque constructor Johann Fischer from Füssen, this building sits enthroned on a hill at the village. The church was built on the grave of “Blissful Brother Ulrich” and has once been a known pilgrimage site.

Also custom and tradition have an important role to play in the village, as traditions such as the “burning of witches” (Hexenverbrennung) and the so-called “Scheibenschlagen” and “Hollagehn” on the Holy Innocents’ Day (December 28) show. However, the cultural centre “Die Villa” attracts musicians, as it is also a venue for various events as well as artistic and therapeutic courses. Do you prefer active holidays? Pinswang offers various possibilities! Several MTB-trails snake in the municipal territory, including the 8 km long course Pinswang-Fürstenweg. The “Kraftwerkwand” climbing wall at the Ulrichsbrücke bridge is particularly popular in high summer, as it is faced north. Hiking trails offer you plenty of possibilities for your holidays. In winter, however, there is a 9 km long cross-country ski trail and also the Reuttener Bergbahnen lift facilities are within easy reach, making you access the Hahnenkamm skiing resort.

Our tip: Due to its beneficial position, Pinswang is an ideal starting point for day trips in the surroundings. The Bavarian royal palaces Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof or the villages Oberammergau and Mittenwald, both famous for wood carving, are all within easy reach.
