Kundl Winter 2011

Kundl

The municipality of Kundl is venue for the famous International Youth Film Festival of Tyrol.

Altitude: 526 m asl

The municipality and its villages Kundl, Liesfeld, Saulueg and St. Leonhard extends on a debris cone of the Wildschönauer Ache river. Already in pre-Roman times this area has been settled, in the 15th and 16th century copper and silver were exploited. Today the tractor plant Lindner and the pharmaceutical company Biochemie (Sandoz) have their seat at Kundl. Of particular interest is the emblem of the village: in the upper part a red unicorn is depicted, while in the lower part you can see three yellow stars. This emblem reminds on the Lords of Kundl, of great importance for the history of the village in the 13th century.

The Kundl gorge (Kundler Klamm) is a popular excursion destination and takes you along the Wildschönauer Ache river in the direction of Wildschönau. According to a legend this canyon has been created by a dragon. Restoration works in 2009 made this natural jewel accessible also for wheelchairs and prams. The gorge is walkable within about 2 hours. And if you are looking for a very special souvenir of your holidays at Kundl, you can pick up a stone at the Wildschönauer Ache river and take it to the only stone turning plant all over Tyrol, transforming your stone into jewellery or an article of daily use.

In winter Kundl is a very popular destination for weekenders, appreciating above all the variety of ski resorts located all within easy reach, which are the skiing areas of the Alpbachtal and Brixental valleys and of the Wildschönau area. To complete the offer, in Kundl there are an ice arena for ice skating with skate rental and restaurant as well as a toboggan run and cross-country ski track. For your creature comforts, there are several taverns providing variety for your palate. And of course you have to taste local delicacies such as Schlutzkrapfen, Knödel, Tiroler Gröstl or Kasspatzln!

Our recommendation: every two years, there is the International Youth Film Festival, organised by the film producer Emanuel Altenburger. This festival lasts three days and shows the best movies, admission is free!
