The Dorfertal valley and the Grossvenediger
Altitude: 1,312 m asl
At the head of the romantic Virgental valley, there is Prägraten am Grossvenediger and its hamlets Bobojoch, Wallhorn, St. Andrä, Hinterbichl and Bichl. Despite of its mountainous position, the area has already been inhabited in the 5th century, probably due to the copper occurrence in the area. A stone cist grave that has been found in Hinterbichl proves this matter of fact. A curiosity by the way: with 7 inhabitants per sqkm, Prägraten am Grossvenediger features the second lowest population density of the district. This means that there is enough space for relaxing holidays!
As good as behind the village there is the Grossvenediger mountain, featuring about 3,662 m asl. The major part of the municipal area is included in the Hohe Tauern National Park and offers fabulous hiking paths, some of which are the Venediger and the Lasörling high paths. What is also worth seeing is the path “Umbalfälle”, which demonstrates the power of a glacial stream, as well as the Islitzer mill, where the miller shows you twice a week how flour is produced. And of course you can also buy it - guaranteed self-made!
Winter in Prägraten obviously stands for holidays in the snow! Ice skating is possible on the ice rink in the village. If you would like to reach the top of the mountain, there are two skiing areas in the surroundings. Nearby the village there are two ski lifts called “Bichllifte”, which are perfect for beginners. Otherwise the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski region, featuring 110 km of ski slopes, is within easy reach.
Our recommendation: a visit to the local museum Oberbichl, which features an interesting collection of agricultural implements of ancient times…
